According to Dr Janja Lalich, a professor of sociology, and a world leading expert on cults, a cult contains the following 3 characteristics:
authoritarian, charismatic leader seen as a god-like with narcissistic traits (see criteria below);
a form of indoctrination using thought reform or mind control; and
a combination of sexual, financial, physical, or mental exploitation designed to put the cult's needs before your own.
